LTI integration allows you to embed lessons to help you teach APA Style and academic writing skills outside of instruction time. Read more about adding links to Academic Writer lessons in your course on our LTI Integration page.

Each quick guide and tutorial contains:

A lesson on a specific topic;
Ungraded formative assessments in the form of knowledge checks; and
A graded quiz.

Proof of Completion

After completing all of the components listed above, students can download a certificate of completion to be submitted in a separate LMS course assignment that allows for a file upload. Students must complete 100% of the lessons, including all knowledge checks and quiz, before downloading their certificate of completion. The certificate will include the score for the quiz, but not the knowledge checks.

Quizzes

Academic Writer lessons included a graded quiz to assess student mastery of the topic. Each quiz has

Five or 10 questions based on the number of learning objectives in the lesson;
Randomized questions and answer choices; and
Three attempts to attain the highest score possible.

Quizzes do not provide feedback on the correct or incorrect answers.

Academic Writer Institutional Access Methods

You can set up access to your Academic Writer and APA Style Manual subscriptions in multiple ways – ensuring students have access to the resource from environments they’re already using and regardless of their location.

With IP authentication, OpenAthens, and proxy access, users have access to the platform homepages and all lessons in both Academic Writer and APA Style Manual.

To access personalized content like certificates of completion, references, and papers in Academic Writer and highlights and notes in APA Style Manual, users need to log in to their individual accounts. (If your institution subscribes to both platforms, students can use the same APA account for Academic Writer and APA Style Manual.)

Troubleshooting Access

If you're having trouble accessing Academic Writer, check that:

You’re using a supported browser (Chrome, Firefox, or Safari).
We have the correct IP addresses on file. If you’re having trouble with proxy access, make sure we have your proxy IP on file (and know which IP is your proxy server if it is part of a sequential range).
You're using an institutional link if you're not within IP range.

If you’re having trouble logging in to your existing Academic Writer account, you may try clearing your browser cookies and cache before logging in again.

Access analytics and customize page branding

The Academic Writer Admin Center is available to the designated admin user - this may be tied to a shared email like an eresources or reference desk email. Make sure you are within IP range and selecting the Admin Center link from the footer of any Academic Writer page.

Using the Analytics area, you can view platform analytics including the number of accounts, references, and papers created as well the number of learning objects viewed by month for a designated time range.

The Admin Center also allows you to customize Academic Writer pages by adding an institutional logo and setting a "Contact Your Administrator" email address.

This page only applies to Academic Writer course adoption users. If your library has an institutional subscription, please refer to the Academic Writer Teaching Resources homepage for additional information on access and use.

Thank you for choosing Academic Writer. We’re here to help you get started assigning content and using additional tools and features of the platform.

Before we get started, let’s make sure that Academic Writer is added to your learning management system (LMS). If others at your institutional are already using Academic Writer, this LTI integration is already complete.

Onboarding

Your assigned Customer Success Specialist will guide you through onboarding, ensuring that you have everything you need to successfully implement Academic Writer in your course.

Your next steps are:

Assigning Academic Writer Content - Once your LMS admin has added the APA content provider via LTI integration, you and your Customer Success Specialist meet one-on-one for personalized training on the best way to add content and assignments.
This discussion may include course goals, learning outcomes, and major assignments to help identify how you and your students can get the most out of Academic Writer.
If you’re accustomed to using LTI tools, you can also use your provided links spreadsheet to add assignments according to the LMS you use.
Training - Depending on your unique plans for adoption and implementation, you might decide to schedule additional customized training with your Customer Success Specialist for yourself or your students.

If you think you have admin rights in Canvas and do not see the Admin icon in your view, check that you’re logged in to the right profile.

Log in to Canvas.
Select the Admin icon and correct account.
From the navigation menu, select Settings .
Select the Apps tab.

2. Linking to the Academic Writer Homepage

To encourage students to use Academic Writer without assigning specific quick guides or tutorials, add a link to the Academic Writer homepage. You may want to include a link to the orientation lessons and the APA Publishing Training YouTube page to assist students in using Academic Writer.

To add a link to the Academic Writer homepage:

Navigate to the module where you would like to add the Academic Writer Home page and select the + to add an external tool.
Since you know LTI integration has already been completed, skip the list of providers and enter the URL https://my.apa.org/ltigateway/lti?ERIGHTS_TARGET=https://academicwriter.apa.org (Be careful when copying and pasting this URL - a leading or trailing space can prevent access!)
Name this Academic Writer link for students. Consider what other Academic Writer links you might include in this module to make sure it is clear that this is a general link to the homepage, not a specific lesson.
Select Add Item to add the link to your selected course module.
The first time students, select any Academic Writer link, they will be prompted to log in to their Academic Writer accounts (or create one if they don't have one already).

3. Creating a Content Selection Page

The Academic Writer Content Selection Page provides the LTI-specific links to Academic Writer content that allows seamless access to quick guides, tutorials, and samples from course content areas. This page is intended for instructors and other course designers and should not be visible to students.

To add your Content Selection page:

Navigate to the module where you would like to add your own link to the Academic Writer Content Selection Page and select the + to add an External Tool.
Since you know LTI integration has already been completed, skip the list of providers and enter the URL https://my.apa.org/ltigateway/lti?ERIGHTS_TARGET=https://academicwriter.apa.org/learnbb (Be careful when copying and pasting this URL - a leading or trailing space can prevent access!)
Enter a Page Name . Since this won’t be visible to students, name this link something that makes sense to you. This example uses “Academic Writer Content Selection.”
Make sure the box to Load in a new tab is selected.
Select Add Item to add it to the course module. (If you’re adding this to your own course, you do not need to publish it, as this is the link you’ll use to preview content and copy LTI URLs.)
You’ll use this link to access and copy links to specific Academic Writer content so that you can add links (in the same way you just added the Content Selection Page) to quick guides, tutorials, and samples to your course content.

4. Adding Content Links

Now that you have added the Content Selection Page to your course, you can begin adding Academic Writer content links to your course for students. You can preview any of the learning resources available in the Content Selection Page before including them in your course by selecting the preview button.

Tip: If you’ll be requiring Academic Writer in your course, we recommend introducing the resource with the Getting Started With Academic Writer lesson.

Please note that student accounts are required to access Academic Writer via LTI and after initial log in, students will experience single sign-on from the LMS to their Academic Writer account.

If it’s not already open, navigate to and select your Academic Writer Content Selection Page link so that you can access and copy the URLs needed to add content links.
In the Academic Writer Content Selection Page, select a heading or category to view content options. Select Show Link to select and copy the URL you’ll need to add that specific learning object. (You can also use the Preview option to review the lesson or sample in its entirety.)
Navigate to the course module where you’d like to add an Academic Writer link and select + to add new module content; then select External Tool from the drop-down menu.
Paste the URL in the appropriate field. In the Page Name field, name the link. We recommend using the lesson or sample title so that the content is clear for students. Make sure the box to Load in a new tab is selected.

Select Add Item . Make sure you select the Ø in your module to publish your new Academic Writer link.

Continue to add quick guides, tutorials, and samples to your modules as needed. Remember that you can copy modules, so you can create them once and use them across all courses that you teach.

You need to be a system administrator to complete this section of the LTI integration. If you think you have admin rights in Blackboard and do not see the Admin icon in your view, check that you’re logged in to the right profile. LTI integration at the global level is the same for both Blackboard Learn and Blackboard Ultra.

After logging into Blackboard as an admin, open the Administrator Panel then, in the Integrations section, select LTI Tool Providers .
At this time, Academic Writer only offers an LTI 1.1 integration, so select Register LTI 1.1 Provider .
Enter the LTI details:
Provider Domain: my.apa.org
Provider Domain Status: Approved
Default Configuration: Set Globally
Tool Provider Key: Provided by APA
Tool Provider Secret: Provided by APA
Send User Data: Send user data only over SSL
User Fields to Send: Check all (Role in Course, Name, Email Address)
Click Submit. Your system level LTI integration is complete.

Blackboard Versions

Blackboard currently has two user interfaces - Blackboard Learn and Blackboard Ultra. The navigation on the left-hand side is a good way to differentiate Blackboard Learn from Blackboard Ultra, where the plus sign (+) used to add content is a key identifier of the interface. Make sure you're using the version that matches your LMS.

2. Linking to the Academic Writer Homepage

In Blackboard Learn , to add a link to the Academic Writer homepage:

Log in to Blackboard, navigate to the course where you would like to add Academic Writer content.
Select the folder or content area where you want to add content and select Build Content . From the dropdown menu, select Create Web Link . Please note that Academic Writer links cannot be used in Blackboard Modules.
Complete the New Link form with the following details:
Name: Academic Writer Homepage
URL: https://my.apa.org/ltigateway/lti?ERIGHTS_TARGET=https://academicwriter.apa.org (Be careful when copying and pasting this URL - a leading or trailing space can prevent access!)
Make sure to check the box to indicate This link is to a Tool Provider .
Enable Evaluation: No (Note that the Enable Evaluation option only appears after you select the box to indicate that This link is to a Tool Provider.)
Description: Consider what other Academic Writer links you might include in your course content to make sure this description makes it clear to students that this is a general link to the homepage, not a specific lesson.
Web Link Options: Open in New Window - Yes
Standard Options: Permit Users to View this Content - Yes
Select Submit .

In Blackboard Ultra , to add a link to the Academic Writer homepage:

Log in to Blackboard, navigate to the course where you would like to add Academic Writer content.
Select the folder or content area where you want to add content and select the plus sign (+) , then +Create .
Select Teaching tools with LTI connection from the resulting menu and complete the LTI link details:

Do NOT select the option to create a gradebook entry.

3. Creating a Content Selection Page

The Academic Writer Content Selection page provides the LTI-specific links to Academic Writer content that allows seamless access to quick guides, tutorials, and samples from course content areas.

To create your Content Selection Page in Blackboard Learn :

Navigate to the course where you would like to add the link to the Content Selection Page.
Select the folder or content area where you want to add content and select Build Content . From the dropdown menu, select Create Web Link .
Complete the Web Link form fields:
Name: Academic Writer Content Select Page
Since this won’t be visible to students, name this link something that makes sense to you or a reminder that the link does not need to be made visible to students.
URL: https://my.apa.org/ltigateway/lti?ERIGHTS_TARGET=https://academicwriter.apa.org/learnbb
Make sure the box for This link is to a Tool Provider is checked and Enable Evaluation is no.
Check the box to Open in a New Window .
Description: Since this is for yourself, or other instructors, you may want to indicate that this link is not for students or include details about how to add content links.
In the Standard Options area, select the radio button No to Permit Users to View this Content. Since this link is not for students, it is not necessary to Track Number of Views.
Select Submit .

To create your Content Selection Page in Blackboard Ultra :

Navigate to your course.
Select + Creat e to add a new link.

Select Teaching tools with LTI connection from the Create Item menu and complete the fields:
Visibility: Keep the default Hidden from students
Configuration URL: https://my.apa.org/ltigateway/lti?ERIGHTS_TARGET=https://academicwriter.apa.org/learnbb
Make sure that the box to Open in a new window is checked.
Description: Since this is for yourself, or other instructors, you may want to indicate that this link is not for students or include details about how to add content links.
Select Submit.

4. Adding Content Links

Now that you have added the Content Selection Page to your course, you can begin adding additional links to your course. We recommend adding a link to the Basics of APA Style tutorial if you are introducing APA Style for the first time to your students.

You can preview any of the learning resources available in the Content Selection Page before including them in your course by selecting the preview button.

To add content to your Blackboard Learn course:

If it’s not already open, navigate to and select your Academic Writer Content Selection Page link so that you can access and copy the URLs needed to add content links.
In the Academic Writer Content Selection Page, select a heading or category to view content options. Select Show Link to select and copy the URL you’ll need to add that specific learning object. (You can also use the Preview option to review the lesson or sample in its entirety.)
Select the folder or content area where you want to add content and select Build Content. From the drop-down menu, select Create Web Link. (Don’t forget, Academic Writer cannot be used within a Blackboard Learning Module.)
Complete the New Link form with the following details:
Name: We recommend using the lesson or sample title so that the content is clear for students.
URL: Paste the URL that you copied from the Content Selection Page.
Check the box to indicate This link is to a Tool Provider.
Enable evaluation: No
Open in a New Window: Yes
Permit Users to View this Content: Yes
Select Submit after making sure that your link will open in a new window.

You may also want to consider using Blackboard features to provide establish learning paths by using Adaptive Release and provide insight on how your students are using Academic Writer by using the Track Number of Views option.

To add content to your Blackboard Ultra course:

If it’s not already open, navigate to and select your Academic Writer Content Selection Page link so that you can access and copy the URLs needed to add content links.
In the Academic Writer Content Selection Page, select a heading or category to view content options. Select Show Link to select and copy the URL you’ll need to add that specific learning object. (You can also use the Preview option to review the lesson or sample in its entirety.)

2. Linking to the Academic Writer Homepage

To add a link to the Academic Writer homepage:

Log in to Brightspace and navigate to the course where you would like to add the Academic Writer homepage.
Select the module where you would like to add the homepage link.
Select Existing Activities , then External Learning Tools from the dropdown.
Select the Create New LTI Link button.
In the resulting Add Activity window, complete the fields:
Title: Academic Writer Home

Navigate to the module where you would like to add the Academic Writer Content Selection page.
Select Existing Activities , then External Learning Tools from the dropdown.
In the resulting Add Activity window, complete the fields:

Select Create and Insert to save your link.

Academic Writer Features

Orientation Lessons

Two lessons, Getting Started with Academic Writer and Writing in Academic Writer, are available (and can be graded for completion). These lessons orient students to the Academic Writer platform and familiarize them with terminology used not only in Academic Writer, but in APA Style and scholarly writing. Check your onboarding spreadsheet for the specific URL to add to your course modules.

Reference Center

Mostly used in conjunction with the Writing Center for in-text citations, reference lists, and annotated bibliographies, the Reference Center houses students’ collection of references. Students can create their own references using forms or import RIS files from research databases and reference management software. RIS import can be particularly helpful for nursing and education students who may not be adding to their collection from the search of adapted APA PsycINFO references.

To help find and organize references, students can add and save tags, notes, and specific quotations to each reference in their collection.

Grammar Check

Academic Writer’s paper editor has several tools to assist students as they’re writing, including grammar and spell check. By using this feature, both students can focus on the content of their paper, and you spend less time correcting basic grammatical errors. The grammar check tool looks for

subject-verb agreement
split infinitives
mood (indicative versus subjunctive)
pronouns as subjects and objects (who versus whom)
readability

The tool also checks punctuation and abbreviations, especially those that should only be used inside of parentheses, as recommended by APA Style guidelines.

Research Lab Book

Each Academic Writer paper includes five Research Lab Book tools: Develop My Research Idea, Plan and Track My Research, Create an Annotated Bibliography, Describe My Tests and Measures, and Track the Flow of Participants. Any of these tools can be assigned independently or as iterative submissions in conjunction with a paper assignment. For example, you could ask students to submit their research idea or plan and annotated bibliography for approval or feedback before turning in their paper assignment.

LTI Integration for Academic Writer

There are a number of features and benefits of integrating Academic Writer into your learning management system (LMS).

In addition to putting the resource in a location you know students are required to use, instructors can add specific Academic Writer lessons, and even force certain learning paths using LMS-specific features like adaptive release and mastery paths.

For broader course adoption of Academic Writer, we recommend that:

LMS admins set up LTI integration at a global level. Setting up integration at the global level allows all instructors to use the resource in their courses.
Add the Academic Writer Content Selection Page to an institution-wide instructional resources course. The content selection page is where instructors will copy the specific LTI link they must use to add content to their courses. The LTI links must be used so that access is recognized through your subscription and LMS.
