Institutional Access Updates

Update your access settings due to security updates

Planned security updates to the Academic Writer platform may require updating some settings for proxy, OpenAthens, and LTI access.

Updates should be completed by November 1, 2026, for uninterrupted access to Academic Writer.

For self-hosted and hosted proxy

Make sure you are using the current proxy stanza.

The current stanza includes lines for all institutionally available APA Publishing products - Academic Writer, APA PsycNet, and APA Style Manual. You should use this stanza even if you don't license products on all three platforms.

Tip: Make sure you remove any previously used stanzas to ensure seamless access.

Update shared attributes

Updates to the Academic Writer entity will require some updates to shared attibutes.

If you use OpenAthens through the Academic Writer login page or any OpenAthens Redirector URLs, you do not need to make any changes to your links. If you use any other links (i.e., bookmarks or hard coded links) on your institutional access pages, please replace those with an OpenAthens Redirector  URL.

Tip: Direct students who say they can no longer access Academic Writer from bookmarked links to your updated OpenAthens Redirector URL link.

You can generate an OpenAthens Redirector URL at https://go.openathens.net/generate/

Regardless of how you use OpenAthens, verify that attributes are shared with the correct entity. If eduPersonScopedAffiliation is only shared with the older entity (https://my.apa.org/oa/entity), it must also be shared with the new entity (http://my.apa.org/openathens/oa/metadata).

LTI settings for all learning management systems

For continued access to Academic Writer through your learning management system, you'll need to:

  1. Have your LMS admin update your LTI tool provider settings launch URL. The new launch URL is sso.apa.org
  2. Update course links to the Academic Writer Content Selection Page. [URL]
  3. Update all course links to the Academic Writer homepage and specific lessons using the LTI links in the updated Academic Writer Content Selection Page.

If you do not currently use OpenAthens or LTI access and would like to set up those access methods, please contact us.

For OpenAthens, include the following in your message:

  • Institution name as you'd like it to appear in the list,
  • OpenAthens Identity (Entity ID),
  • Federation scope, and
  • OpenAthens IP.
